WESTPAS Trainers' Bios

Lynn Ann Davis

Lynn Ann Davis is the Head of the Preservation Department for the University of Hawai`i at Manoa.  Born and raised in Hawai`i, she has been actively involved in the preservation of library and archival collections for over 30 years. Prior to working at the University she was Chairman of the Visual and Archival Collections at Bishop Museum.  As adjunct faculty member of the University’s graduate programs in Library and Information Science and Museum Studies, she teaches courses in Preservation Management and Conservation Treatment.  Lynn has presented workshops to professional organizations (libraries, archives, and museums) in Hawai`i and the North Pacific region on a wide range of preservation topics including integrated pest management issues and disaster planning and response.  She provided leadership for the Library’s successful response to a major disaster in October 2004, and prepared a case study on her experiences for Heritage Preservation’s A Public Trust at Risk: The Heritage Health Index Report on the State of America’s Collections (http://www.heritagepreservation.org/HHI/case91.html). Lynn has served as a WESTPAS trainer since 2007, serving Hawai’i, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Marianas.

Kristen Kern

Kristen Kern is the Fine and Performing Arts Librarian at Portland State University and previously served as its Preservation/Catalog Librarian for 11 years, managing the library’s Preservation Unit. Since 2000 she has presented instruction on basic preservation issues at regional preservation workshops and conferences. Kristen served as the chair of the Portland area’s PORTALS Disaster Recovery Group 2001-2008 and co-chair of the Oregon Library Association’s (OLA) Library Preservation Round Table since 2008. She has published in the area of cooperative disaster management and in 2009 was elected Board Member at Large on the Executive Committee of the Preservation and Reformatting Section of the Association of Library Collections and Technical Services of the American Library Association. Kristen  is a member of the American Institute for Conservation Collections Emergency Response Team (AIC CERT)and has been a WESTPAS trainer since 2007, serving Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada. Kristen published two articles in an issue of the OLA Quarterly devoted to disaster preparedness (http://data.memberclicks.com/site/ola/olaq_14no4.pdf).

Gary L. Menges

Gary Menges is Preservation Administrator at the University of Washington Libraries. Before assuming his current position he was Head of Special Collections at the UW Libraries for 15 years and served as Chair of the ACRL Rare Books and Manuscripts Section. He has served as PI/Project Director for a number of UW grant projects and been active in cooperative preservation activities in the Pacific Northwest. He initiated the proposal for the Washington Preservation Initiative (WPI), which was sponsored by the Washington State Library and supported by IMLS through LSTA funding, and served as Chair of the Advisory Group. Between September 2003 and May 2006 he took a leadership role in planning 36 WPI preservation workshops on sixteen different topics. He served as Chair for the Steering Committee for the IMLS funded “Preserving Washington's Cultural Heritage: Connecting to Collections," He manages the regional preservation listserv “PreserveNW,” teaches the “Preservation and Conservation of Library Materials” course at the UW Information School, and is an Affiliate Faculty member in the UW Graduate Program in Museology. Gary helped plan, hosted, and taught in the IMLS-funded Pacific Northwest Preservation Management Institute, which provided three week-long sessions of preservation training for 22 archivists, curators, and librarians in Idaho, Oregon and Washington in 2004-2005. He is a member of the American Institute for Conservation Collections Emergency Response Team (AIC CERT). Gary has been a WESTPAS trainer since 2007, serving Washington and Alaska.

Barclay Ogden

Barclay Ogden is Director for Library Preservation at UC Berkeley, with primary responsibility for preservation program management and development. He has designed and implemented more than three dozen grant-funded preservation projects, including several preservation education and training projects to train mid-career librarians to become preservation administrators and to train conservation technicians in repair of circulating collections. Barclay serves as co-coordinator of the California Preservation Program, an LSTA-funded program to provide preservation information, education, and training services to libraries and archives in California, and has served as the WESTPAS project co-coordinator since 2007.

Julie Page

Julie Page retired in 2007 from UC San Diego Libraries as Head of the Preservation Department. She is a preservation consultant, co-coordinating the California Preservation Programsince 1998 and co-coordinator for WESTPAS since 2007.  Her background as founder of SILDRN (San Diego/Imperial County Libraries Disaster Response Network) as well as her extensive experience with disaster preparedness and response training and response, makes her a knowledgeable resource for cultural institutions.  She is a trainer for the FAIC NEH-funded Emergency Response for Cultural Institutions program and a member of the American Institute for Conservation Collections Emergency Response Team (AIC CERT). Julie has presented preservation workshops and programs for state and national library associations, the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts, Cultural Property Protection Group, International Foundation for Cultural Property Protection, Society of California Archivists, and the Heritage Emergency National Task Force. Julie has published in the areas of preservation education and disaster preparedness. In addition to her role as project co-coordinator, Julie also has been a WESTPAS trainer since 2007, serving California and Colorado.

Randy Silverman

Randy Silverman is Preservation Librarian at the University of Utah's Marriott Library and has been working in library preservation since 1978. He initiated the passage of Utah’s permanent paper law in 1995, served as co-chair of the Library Collections Conservation Discussion Group of the American Institute for Conservation from 1991-98, and was the President of the Utah Library Association from 2000-2001. He currently teaches preservation as adjunct faculty for Emporia State University and the University of Arizona; has published 76 professional articles and book chapters to date; presented 203 lectures or workshops in 27 U.S. states and 11 foreign countries. Randy is a trainer for the FAIC NEH-funded Emergency Response for Cultural Institutions program. He participated in disaster recovery operations in Mississippi following Hurricane Katrina (2005), has investigated emergency mass drying and sterilization techniques with colleagues from the British Library and the Czech National Library. In 2007 he received the Utah Humanities Council’s "Humanities Award." Randy has been a WESTPAS trainer since 2007, serving Utah, Montana, and Wyoming.

Marie (Maja) Clark

Maja Clark is Collections Manager at Shangri La, Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, in Honolulu. Prior to her current position, Maja served as Registrar and Collections Technician, also at Shangri La, and as Development Associate for the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Maja has an MLISc from the Library and Information Science Program at the University of Hawai’i, Manoa, a Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies, also from UH Manoa, and a BA from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York. Maja served as President of the Association of Hawai’i Archivists in 2009 and currently is serving on the leadership team for Hawai’i’s IMLS Connecting to Collections statewide preservation planning project. Maja will be an assistant trainer in 2011-12, serving Hawai’i, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Marianas.
